It is the first general purpose software product to combine live or static geographical location (spatial) information with business data and processes in real time to deliver automated business processes enabling better decision making. For any business that has assets which are spatially located an ability to enter, view and analyze spatial information in order to forecast, plan and record business activities is a key ability.
Spatial information is generally produced using a Geographic Information System (GIS). A simple GIS is computer software which allows capture, storage, and analysis of information defined by it’s location on the Earth. GeoSamba provides GIS functionality and integrates information from other GIS.
GeoSamba is capable of leveraging a wide variety of geographic and tabular data sources including common file formats, imagery, live internet data feeds and modern databases. Its open web service architecture handles native data formats from major GIS vendors, and it both consumes and serves Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) standard services.
There are two primary types of spatial information, discreet and continuous. Discreet information includes data such as a potential insurance customer’s location. Continuous information spreads across a region and may be a map such as a natural hazard probability map.
Both these sources are defined by their geographic position and their relationship to each other is defined by how they overlap. True business effectiveness is achieved when tabular information, such as insurance premium rates, are related to the spatial. For example a lower insurance quote may be automatically generated in real-time for a customer in a low risk area and a letter produced for mailing.

GeoSamba relates events in the physical world with consequences that arise in “zones of influence” that fall under the jurisdiction of the GeoSamba user. The software then integrates intelligent responses linked to the business processes of the user to deliver automated business processes.
GeoSamba’s ability to capture live data feeds via web services is a key strength which resulted in the product being selected by the Commonwealth Research Centre for Spatial Industries (CRCSI) as the technical backbone of the Australian Federal Government’s covert counter-terrorism simulations. Code-named Mercury 05, the exercises demonstrated that access to accurate, real-time information was critical for effective strategic assessment, tactical planning and resource deployment during an emergency.
